The Man Rutland:
We are trying to build a myth. Bill
Rutland was from the American south, hated northern lumber
companies devastating 'his' forests, ran from home in 1916 aged
16. His sister who went to war as an army nurse gave him a green
scarf because of his love of the canopy.
The lithe blond Rutland whose hair stuck
up on end also tried to join the army and was clearly to young.
So he walked across the south of the USA and kept on walking.
The first green scarf wore out and he had another.
He began writing for conservation bodies and local papers, then
Green Scarf stories
began, telling the good side of science and progress. And the
bad. More on Rutland >>>>
