In 1912, a boy of 12 tried to put himself between lumber
men’s razor sharp cross saws and 300 year old pines near his
home in Georgia, USA. He loved those trees.
The boy was tough but a fair haired southerner from a middle
class home. The lumbermen were hardened and bitter Yankees
seeking work in the south.
He was pulled off and beaten up for his troubles. The
lumber men had a dollar to earn.
Later he realized the men wanted progress – boards for new
houses, their wages, profits for the lumber company.
The boy, now a man, Bill Rutland, realized progress has
its bright and dark sides. He started the Green Scarf
Stories column.
Green Scarf Stories praised new technologies & tried to
warn of its dangers. Rutland was fascinated by science and
repelled by its underbelly -- a world of too much.
Along the way Bill Rutland became the father of a girl he
could not, because he was hunted by the FBI, look after.
That girl became a woman and had a daughter.
